A Beginner’s Guide to Female Shaving: Tips & Ideas for Easy Hair Removal at Home

Get all the facts before you decide to start shaving. It’s a personal decision, so trust your instincts just like you would about the makeup or clothes you wear.

Female Shaving Tips

The truth is, some girls start to shave at 10, some at 12, and some at 16—and some never shave. Body hair is normal and healthy, but it grows at different times and at different rates for everybody. So when you think you’re ready to start getting rid of unwanted hair, talk it over with someone you trust—maybe your mom or big sister. Try saying something like "Do you have any shaving tips to get me started?”

The Truth about Shaving

Before we move on, let’s put an end to some of those persistent myths that are out there.

Myth 1: Shaving causes your hair to grow back thicker, darker or faster.
Truth: No way. Hair regrowth is determined by what's on the inside—your genetics and hormones. So why does this myth keep popping up? As hair grows back, the blunt ends make it seem thicker. Most hair grows about a quarter-inch per month and is a sign that your body is healthy and doing just what it's supposed to do.

Myth 2: Shaving leaves skin dry and flaky.
Truth: On the contrary! Shaving helps skin look and feel smooth by whisking away your top layer of dead skin. But remember to use a shaving gel and a moisturizing lotion after you shave to keep skin feeling (and looking) its best.

Myth: A new blade causes nicks and cuts.
Truth: Actually, it’s the opposite! Shaving with an old, dull blade can cause more nicks and cuts. Because a new blade is sharper, it’s safer. Use a light touch—you really just need to skim over skin—and choose a good razor, like the Venus Embrace razor , to help prevent any unwanted “ouch!” moments.

Myth 3: Men’s razors are better than women’s razors.
Truth: Actually, the technology behind Gillette men’s and women’s razors is the same, but Venus razors are designed just for women (and girls). Venus razor blades individually adjust to hug your natural curves. They also feature a specially designed handle for a great grip to keep it from slipping out of your hand.

Myth 4: You have to go to a salon to get smooth skin.
Truth: When it comes to hair removal, you’ve got lots of options. But wet shaving is a quick and easy way to help skin stay soft and beautiful. Plus it’s inexpensive and convenient; you never even have to leave the comfort of your own home.

Get useful facts before you decide to start shaving. It’s a personal decision, so trust your instincts just like you would about the makeup or clothes you wear.

7 Easy Hair Removal Ideas for Women

Hair grows just about everywhere (like legs, underarms, bikini area, even the face). And with lots of ways to get rid of it, you’ll want to learn what’s best for you. So check out the short description of each method below. And if you want to get more information on any of these, check out Shaving Alternatives at Reward Me, where Gillette Venus (aka the hair removal experts) gives you the scoop on each with lots of details. And of course, since your mom and big sis might have experience with one of these, ask for their input too.

1. Wet Shaving:
Wet shaving uses a set of blades to glide over wet skin and lathered shave gel to remove unwanted hair.

2. Dry Shaving:
Electric (or dry) shaving uses a fine screen that traps hair and cuts it off with a moving blade underneath.

3. Depilatory Creams:
Depilatory creams, lotions, roll-ons and foams all use a chemical compound to dissolve the hair at the surface of the skin.

4. Waxing:
Waxing can be done hot or cold. The wax gets applied to your skin and then is quickly stripped away in the opposite direction, pulling the hair out with it.

5. Epilation:
Epilators look a lot like electric shavers. The head of the epilator is placed on the skin and rotating disks remove hair at the root.

6. Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal uses a laser to pass a pulsating beam of light through the skin to your hair follicles.

7. Electrolysis:
Electrolysis uses a very fine needle that gets inserted into the hair follicle and destroys regenerative cells with a mild electrical current.

Essential Women Shaving Tips

Wet shaving is a fast and easy way to get rid of unwanted hair without breaking your budget. You can expect to spend about 20 – 40 a year on shaving, which includes your razor, razor blade refills and shave gel—that's less than a shopping spree with friends. Now that's a deal!

But remember, choosing the best way to remove hair is your decision. Gillette Venus has shaving tips to help you decide which hair removal method is right for you. And if you feel that shaving isn’t right for you, try something else. Lots of girls mix and match.

Refillable Razors:
We recommend starting with a Venus Embrace refillable razor. It has 5 blades for an ultra-close shave and long-lasting smoothness. Plus there’s a Ribbon of Moisture for a smooth glide to help minimize any nicks and cuts. But feel free to try any Venus razor, like Venus Breeze with built-in shave gel bars—no need for shave gel! The great thing is that all Venus refillable razors have a reusable handle and interchangeable cartridges, so you can try out different types of Venus razor blades without buying a whole new razor—great for the shaver who’s conscious of her environment.

Disposable Razors:
Venus disposable razors come in multi-razor packs where the handle and razor blade are permanently attached, so you just use and toss the whole razor when you are done. They are convenient for a girl on the go or as a second razor for your gym bag and can still give you an amazing shave. They also come in plenty of fun colors so you can express yourself! So it’s easy to keep your legs looking (and feeling) great, no matter where you are.

Not sure which Venus razor is for you? Check out the Venus Products at Reward Me to help you find a perfect match. And remember, you really can’t go wrong! All Venus razors have comfort features like SoftGrip handles for no-slip control in a range of fun, bright colors, and some are even scented. Plus, most Venus razors have lubricating strips that help the razor glide over your skin to help prevent nicks and cuts. Short on time? No problem. Try a Venus razor with built-in shave gel bars, like Venus Spa Breeze Disposable razors, for a convenient and pampering shave.

The Correct Way to Shave - Body Shaving Tips for Women

Step 1: First, soak hair in the shower or bath for 2-3 minutes to soften.
Step 2: Lather up with a protective shave gel like Satin Care Sensitive Skin shave gel. Shave gel helps keep water in the hair and makes sure that the razor glides easily over your skin, protecting you from potential nicks and cuts. Plus, it helps you keep track of where you’ve shaved to avoid missing any spots.
Step 3: Start shaving with the help of your razor.
Tip: Always use a light touch, don’t press down, and shave legs from the ankles up. For your underarms, shave from all angles—up, down and sideways. And for the bikini area, shave in the direction of hair growth first (inward) and against for an extra-close shave. (When you’re ready to start shaving your bikini area, first watch the Dare to Bare video and learn how to do it.)
Step 4: After shaving, moisturize. This step is very important as moisturization helps to keep your skin hydrated, not to mention glowing.

Shave as often as you need to—some girls shave every day and some only twice a week. It's about what feels right for you and makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Remember: Always shave with a fresh blade to save your skin from nicks and cuts. This means you need to replace your blade at the first sign of dullness or discomfort (usually after 5-10 shaves).

After each shave, simply rinse and air-dry your razor to help prevent it from becoming clogged. Sharing a razor’s not recommended, but it’s OK if you ask your mom or sister if you can try out hers. Once you decide that shaving is right for you, it’s best (and more fun) to buy your own Venus razor.

The recap

So now you’ve got the basics down. Think you’re ready to shave? Great! Remember, there is no right age to start; it’s totally up to you. Shaving is a great way to get rid of unwanted hair for most girls. Plus, it can give you that extra boost of confidence to make you feel like your beautiful self.
